Most of those early English locks were converted snaphaunces. The decorative designs are inspired by the early flintlock gun by one of the Lebourgeoy family in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY and the Pierre Lebourgeoy gun shown in Gusler and Lavins's book "Decorated Firearms".Then make a cutter along the design of a couple of saw teeth that fit the groove. This can cut the groove deeper and is advanced to the next groove. Then a paper shim is placed under the cutter and the process is repeated till the grooves are deepened to your goal. A slow and labor intensive job but rather simple.Both rifles will produce comparable accuracy/precision. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. I HAD a 24" TC Grey Hawk with both .50 and .54 barrels, both 48" twist.The final step in preparing the distressed barrel was to sand it down using various grits of sand paper, from 100 down to 220. Step two was to clean/de-grease the surface thoroughly and plug the muzzle and touch hole. Then I applied cold browning solution. I use the stuff from Dixie because it works very well.I got it home and it was a .50 cal.,, CVA frontier in great shape with a ball stuck about 3 inches from the breech. I pulled the nipple and clean out screw and pushed the ball closer to the breech. There was no powder under it so I dribbled in about 20 grains of 3f and replaced the screw and nipple. It has a higher ignition temperature than pure black. Some shooters start with a 5-10 grain load of real black powder and then some Pyrodex over that. Sounds like a lot of fussing and won't solve your problem. You will need real black powder to prime, for sure.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great.
